What does opening night look like from a sofa in Boston?

At 3:00 PM ET on Tuesday 20 October 2026 the Boston Celtics tip off against the Detroit Pistons, and anyone watching from Boston is doing it in the middle of a working afternoon. The NBA has put the first game of its season in a daytime slot on a Tuesday, which is a change from the evening slots the league usually reserves for its showcase games. Opening night in Boston is a lunch break, not a night out.

Two games follow. At 7:00 PM ET the Philadelphia 76ers visit the New York Knicks, and at 9:30 PM ET the Oklahoma City Thunder play the San Antonio Spurs in a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference finals. All three air on NBC and stream on Peacock, so one subscription covers the whole night from the first possession to the last.

What follows is 82 games per team across just under six months, and three dates that carry more weight than the rest. The first is 20 October 2026. The second is 11 December 2026, when the Emirates NBA Cup is decided in Indianapolis. The third is 25 December 2026, when five games run back to back from noon to 10:30 PM ET.

When does the 2026-27 NBA season start?

The 2026-27 NBA regular season starts on Tuesday 20 October 2026 with a three-game tripleheader on NBC and Peacock. Rosters for opening day are set the day before, on Monday 19 October 2026 at 5:00 PM ET. Training camps opened on 29 September 2026 and preseason games began on 3 October 2026, so the league plays seventeen days of exhibition basketball before a single game counts.

Three things about that table matter for the season ahead. The Celtics and the Pistons were the top two teams in the Eastern Conference last season, so the first game of 2026-27 is a rematch of the conference's best. The 76ers travel to New York with LeBron James on the roster, which is the first national look at a rebuilt Philadelphia side. The Thunder and the Spurs close the night as a repeat of the 2026 Western Conference finals.

How does the Emirates NBA Cup 2026 work?

The Emirates NBA Cup is played inside the regular season, not alongside it, which is why the schedule the NBA released in August 2026 only fixes 80 of each team's 82 games. The remaining two opponents are decided by how teams finish in group play.

1. 30 October 2026 — group play begins. Sixty group-play games stream on Prime Video, on Fridays through 27 November 2026 plus two midweek dates on 24 and 25 November 2026.
2. 27 November 2026 — group play ends. Group winners and the best second-placed teams advance to the knockout bracket.
3. 4 and 5 December 2026 — quarterfinals. Eight teams play four single-elimination games.
4. 8 or 9 December 2026 — semifinals. Four teams play two single-elimination games.
5. 11 December 2026 — championship. One winner-take-all game at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
6. The two games left over. Teams knocked out before the knockout rounds pick up the extra fixtures on the resulting off-days, which is how every team reaches 82 games.

One detail catches people out every year: statistics from the championship game on 11 December 2026 do not count toward regular-season totals. A player can score 30 points in the final and finish the season with none of them on his record.

What are the five NBA Christmas Day games?

The NBA plays five games on Christmas Day 2026 across ABC and ESPN, running from midday to 10:30 PM ET. The league has put a rematch of the 2026 NBA Finals in the opening slot.

San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks replays the 2026 NBA Finals, and the 76ers at the Lakers puts LeBron James back on a Los Angeles floor in Philadelphia colours. Five games from midday to 10:30 PM ET is the single densest day of the NBA calendar.

Which dates matter after Christmas?

The second half of the season runs from January to April 2027, and the NBA has already fixed every milestone in it. The trade deadline lands eight days before the All-Star break, and the regular season ends with all thirty teams playing on the same day.

Which NBA teams play outside the United States in 2026-27?

Seven preseason and regular-season games are set for venues outside the United States in 2026-27, in five countries. Two of them are in January 2027, when the San Antonio Spurs and the New Orleans Pelicans play in Paris and then in Manchester three days apart.

For supporters in Europe, the Manchester game on 17 January 2027 is the one worth planning around: a 10:30 AM ET tip means a mid-afternoon start in the United Kingdom.

What do fans wear for opening night and the NBA Cup?

Opening night and Cup nights are the two points in a basketball season when a jersey gets worn somewhere other than the sofa. The Icon Edition is the home-colour version and the one most supporters start with; City and Statement editions are the second and third shirts a fan adds once the season is under way. Supporter (fan) cut is the standard across the shirts below, and the close-fitting authentic cut applies only where the product title says so.

Jersey Pro Center stocks Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Icon Edition shirts alongside the City Edition range, in mens, womens and kids sizes. Every name and number is printed exactly as it appears in the product photo, because there is no name field at checkout. If you want the layering side of it, our guide to styling a basketball jersey covers what to wear underneath. The same opening-night logic applies to the other two leagues that start inside this window: our NHL 2026-27 season guide and our MLB postseason 2026 guide set out their dates.
