Fan Edition, Authentic Cut, Training or Retro: What You Are Actually Buying
Updated 15 September 2026 · by the Jersey Pro Center team
Quick answer
Football shirts come in four broad types, and the difference is cut and purpose, not quality. A fan edition is the relaxed, everyday version of the match shirt. An authentic cut is the same design cut close to the body, the way players wear it — most people size up on these. Training, pre-match, warm-up and strike kit is built for movement and is usually the best value if you want the club's colours without paying for a match shirt. Retro shirts are past seasons, often single-piece stock. All four are stocked across Real Madrid, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern, Man Utd, Liverpool, Barcelona, Juventus and PSG.

Four types of shirt, four different purposes, and one very common sizing mistake. Here is how to tell them apart before you buy.
The four types, side by side
| Type | Cut | Best for | In stock at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fan edition | Relaxed, straight through the body | Weekend wear, layering over a tee, first shirt for a kid | Every club; widest at Man City, Arsenal, Juventus |
| Authentic cut | Close to the body, tapered, lighter fabric | People who want the on-pitch silhouette; size up if unsure | Real Madrid away, Man City home, Chelsea home, Juventus home, PSG third |
| Training / pre-match / warm-up / strike | Athletic, often a quarter-zip or knit | Actually playing, or the cheapest route into club colours | Chelsea (strike knit, academy), Man City (warm-up), Bayern (training, street), Barcelona (pre-match) |
| Retro | Cut of its era — often boxier | Collectors, nostalgia, a shirt nobody else at the pub has | Man Utd 1997-98 / 1998-99 / 2005-06, Bayern 1996-98 / 2008-09, Barcelona 2020-21 / 2022-23, Real Madrid 2001-02, PSG 2001 |
Fan edition: the default, and usually the right answer
Most people should buy the fan edition. It is the same shirt you see on the pitch in design terms — same colours, same crest placement, same sponsor layout — with a cut that works over a t-shirt and survives a washing machine. It is what we sell most of, and it is what we would tell a friend to buy.

Authentic cut: what changes, and the sizing trap
Authentic-cut shirts are cut to sit close to the body, the way a player wears one. Two practical consequences:
- Size up. If you are between sizes, or you do not want a fitted look, take the next size up. This is the single most common sizing mistake we see.
- The fabric is lighter. It breathes better on a hot day and feels less substantial in the hand. Some people love that, some prefer the weight of the fan edition.
We stock authentic-cut versions of the Real Madrid 2026-27 away shirt, the Man City 2025-26 home shirt, the Chelsea 2026-27 home match shirt, the Juventus 2026-27 home shirt and the PSG 2025-26 third shirt.

Training, pre-match and warm-up: the value pick
This is the category people forget exists, and it is often the smartest buy. A pre-match or warm-up top carries the club's crest and colours, is built from proper athletic fabric, and costs less than a match shirt. If the shirt is for five-a-side rather than the sofa, start here.
Chelsea's strike knit and academy ranges, Man City's warm-up jerseys, Bayern's training and street jerseys, and Barcelona's pre-match shirts are the deepest lines we hold.

Retro: buy it when you see it
Retro stock is genuinely limited — often one or two pieces in a given size, with condition notes attached. Manchester United from 1997-98, 1998-99 and 2005-06, Bayern from 1996-98 and 2008-09, Barcelona from 2020-21 and 2022-23, Real Madrid's 2001-02 anniversary third and a PSG home shirt from 2001 are all on the shelf as of today. When they are gone they are usually gone.

Long sleeve, womens, kids, baby: the cut options people miss
Almost every shirt above exists in more than one body cut. Long sleeve versions are stocked at Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Juventus and Bayern. Womens cuts at Real Madrid, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Juventus, PSG and Bayern. Kids at nearly every club, and baby and mini kits at Real Madrid, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool and Juventus. If you are buying for more than one person, check the full collection rather than the first shirt you see.

Common questions
What is the difference between a fan edition and an authentic cut?
Cut and fabric. Fan edition is relaxed and a little heavier. Authentic cut sits close to the body with lighter fabric. The design — colours, crest, sponsor — is the same. Most people size up on the authentic cut.
Should I size up on an authentic-cut shirt?
Yes if you are between sizes or do not want a fitted silhouette. This is the most common sizing mistake we see.
Are training and pre-match shirts worth buying?
Yes if you want club colours for less, or you actually play. Chelsea's strike knit, Man City's warm-up jersey, Bayern's training and street jerseys and Barcelona's pre-match shirts are our deepest lines.
Do retro shirts come in new condition?
Retro pieces are past-season stock and carry condition notes. Some are effectively new, others gently worn. The note on each product is the honest one.
Do you stock long sleeve, womens, kids and baby versions?
Yes. Long sleeve at Real Madrid, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Juventus and Bayern. Womens at Real Madrid, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Juventus, PSG and Bayern. Kids at nearly every club, baby and mini kits at Real Madrid, Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool and Juventus.
