NFL Jersey Fit and Sizing: Should You Size Down?
Updated 16 September 2026 · by the Jersey Pro Center team
Quick answer
Size down one size if you want a fitted look and will wear the jersey on its own. Stay at your true size for the classic game-day fit, which is the cut NFL jerseys are built for. Go one size up only if you plan to layer it over a hoodie or sweatshirt. Our men's NFL jersey chart is sized by chest: S 35-37.5in, M 37.5-41in, L 41-44in, XL 44-48.5in, 2XL 48.5-53.5in, 3XL 53.5-58in and 4XL 58-63in. Body length runs from 30in at S to 36in at 4XL, so the hem is designed to sit below the hip. Measure your chest over a thin t-shirt, tape level, arms down. Women's jerseys run on a separate contoured chart and youth jerseys are sold by age bracket rather than adult chest size.

Sizing down is the most repeated piece of NFL jersey advice there is — and it is only right about half the time. Here is how the cut is actually built, the charts for men, women and kids, and how to decide in one step.
The short answer
NFL jerseys are cut roomy and boxy on purpose. They are the widest silhouette of the four big North American leagues by body volume, with broad shoulders and a long hem — built to be worn over something else on a cold Sunday. That is why "size down" is such common advice. It is right about half the time.
- Size down one if you want a tailored, fitted look and you will wear the jersey over a t-shirt or on its own. Ordering your usual chest size in this cut gives you a deliberately loose shirt, which is the point of the cut but not what everyone wants.
- Stay at your true size if you want the classic game-day look — loose through the body, hem below the hip, sleeves covering the upper arm.
- Go one size up only if you are layering. A hoodie under a jersey adds real bulk at the chest and shoulders, and no chart accounts for it.
Why the NFL cut is so roomy
All five league silhouettes are different, and the difference is deliberate rather than a manufacturing quirk. Football is the boxiest of them; soccer is the closest-fitting; ice hockey is the loosest and longest. If you already own shirts from another sport, your usual size will not transfer cleanly across, which is why the quick size finder on our size guide is organised by chest measurement rather than by letter.
| League | Cut style | What that means for your order |
|---|---|---|
| NFL football | Roomy / boxy | Plenty of room for a hoodie underneath. Order true size, or one size down for a tailored fit. |
| Soccer | Athletic / slim | Close to the body. Size up if you are between sizes or want a streetwear fit. |
| NBA basketball | Standard / long | Relaxed through chest and shoulders with an elongated hem. True to size. |
| MLB baseball | Full / button-front | Extra room in the chest; fits comfortably over casual layers. True to size. |
| NHL hockey | Very loose / generous | The loosest cut of all, with extra-long sleeves. Never size up. |
Men's NFL jersey size chart
This is the chart behind every men's NFL jersey we sell. Chest is the measurement that matters most; length tells you where the hem will land.
| Size | Chest (in) | Chest (cm) | Waist (in) | Length (in) | Length (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 35-37.5" | 89-95 cm | 29-32" | 30.0" | 76 cm |
| M | 37.5-41" | 95-104 cm | 32-35" | 31.0" | 79 cm |
| L | 41-44" | 104-112 cm | 35-38" | 32.0" | 81 cm |
| XL | 44-48.5" | 112-123 cm | 38-43" | 33.0" | 84 cm |
| 2XL | 48.5-53.5" | 123-136 cm | 43-47.5" | 34.0" | 86 cm |
| 3XL | 53.5-58" | 136-147 cm | 47.5-52" | 35.0" | 89 cm |
| 4XL | 58-63" | 147-160 cm | 52-57" | 36.0" | 91 cm |
Two things to read out of that table. The step between sizes is about 4in of chest, so if your chest lands in the middle of a band you have room to move in either direction. And length only changes by an inch per size, from 30in to 36in across the whole range — so sizing up makes a jersey wider much faster than it makes it longer.
Should you size down? Match the answer to how you will wear it
| How you will wear it | Order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On its own or over a t-shirt — you want a fitted look | One size down | Removes the deliberate extra room through the chest and shoulders. |
| On its own — you want the classic game-day look | True size | This is the fit the cut was designed for; hem below the hip, loose through the body. |
| Over a hoodie or sweatshirt | True size, or one up if you run broad | The layer eats the room the jersey already has. Never size down here. |
| As a gift, and you are guessing the size | True size | It is the safest single answer, and 30-day returns cover the rest. |
| You are between two sizes and want comfort | Size up | A roomy jersey looks intentional; a tight one does not. |
Layering is the one case where you never size down
If a hoodie is going under the jersey, the chest measurement stops being the constraint — the shoulders and armholes are. A hoodie adds two to three inches of bulk right where the jersey is tightest, and the result is a shirt that pulls across the back when you reach forward. Order your true size and accept a slightly looser look, or go one size up if you are broad through the chest and shoulders.
Length, hem and sleeves: what a chest chart misses
Chest is the number people check. Length is the number that decides whether a jersey looks right on you.
- The hem is designed to sit below the hip. At 30in to 36in of body length, an NFL jersey is longer than a t-shirt in the same size, and it is meant to be worn untucked. If you are used to tucking shirts in, this will feel long.
- Sleeves finish around the mid upper arm on the game cut, and they are wide. That is deliberate: the sleeve is cut to clear a shoulder pad, so on an unaided shoulder it hangs loose.
- The shoulder seam sits past the shoulder point. On a fitted shirt the seam ends where your shoulder ends. On this cut it extends beyond it, which is where the boxy look comes from.
- So when in doubt, judge by chest — not by how the sleeves feel. A jersey whose sleeves feel too wide is usually the right size.
Not every NFL jersey is the same shape
"NFL jersey" is not one garment. The cut is written into the product title, and the difference between the roomiest and the closest is worth a full size. Here is what we actually stock:
| Cut, as named in the product title | How it fits | An example in stock |
|---|---|---|
| Game Jersey / Team Game Jersey | The roomiest cut we carry — the standard game-day silhouette. | Patrick Mahomes Kansas City Chiefs Game Jersey |
| Player Game Jersey | Same body as the game cut, built around one player's name and number. | Josh Allen Buffalo Bills Game Player Jersey |
| Vapor F.U.S.E. Limited / Stitched Limited | Closer through the body than the game cut, with stitched numerals. | Jalen Hurts Philadelphia Eagles Vapor F.U.S.E. Limited Jersey |
| Vapor F.U.S.E. Elite | The closest-fitting build in the range — the on-field cut. If you size down on one jersey, do not do it on this one. | Patrick Mahomes Kansas City Chiefs Team Vapor F.U.S.E. Elite Jersey |
| Legacy Replica | Throwback shape — generous through the body, with an older design. | Jim Kelly Buffalo Bills 1990 Split Legacy Replica Jersey |
| Legend Player Performance Top | A performance top rather than a jersey. It fits like an athletic t-shirt, so order your normal top size, not your jersey size. | Travis Kelce Kansas City Chiefs Legend Player Performance Top |
Women's NFL jerseys run on their own chart
Women's NFL jerseys are a contoured cut, not a scaled-down men's jersey: narrower through the waist, shorter through the body, and sold in US numeric sizes alongside the letter size. Do not order your men's size and expect the same fit.
| Size | Bust / Chest (in) | Bust / Chest (cm) | Waist (in) | Length (in) | US numeric |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 33-35" | 84-89 cm | 26-28" | 27.0" | 4-6 |
| M | 35-38" | 89-97 cm | 28-31" | 27.5" | 8-10 |
| L | 38-41" | 97-104 cm | 31-34" | 28.0" | 12-14 |
| XL | 41-44.5" | 104-113 cm | 34-38" | 28.5" | 16-18 |
| 2XL | 44.5-48.5" | 113-123 cm | 38-42" | 29.0" | 20-22 |
The gap to remember: a women's L is 38-41in of chest and 28in long, while a men's L is 41-44in and 32in long. Same letter, four inches less length.
Youth NFL jerseys are sold by age, not by chest
| Youth size | Age range | Chest (in) | Length (in) | Height (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Youth S (8) | 7-8 yrs | 26-28" | 23.0" | 50-54" |
| Youth M (10-12) | 9-11 yrs | 28-30" | 25.0" | 55-59" |
| Youth L (14-16) | 12-13 yrs | 31-33" | 27.0" | 60-63" |
| Youth XL (18-20) | 14-16 yrs | 34-36" | 29.0" | 64-67" |
Youth jerseys are cut on the same roomy block as the adult game jersey, so a child who usually takes one size up in t-shirts does not need to here. Height is the fastest tiebreaker: if a child is between the age band and the height band, go with the height.
Measure yourself in two minutes
- Wear a thin t-shirt. Measuring over a hoodie will put you a size out.
- Measure your chest at the fullest point, under the armpits. Keep the tape level and do not puff your chest out.
- Match that number to the chart above rather than to the size you wear in another brand.
- Check length against a shirt you already like. Lay your favourite t-shirt flat and measure from the collar to the hem, then compare it with the length column.
If you are still unsure, order the size you think fits best and then email your height, chest and waist measurements to jerseycare@outlook.com. We check the order against the chart before it ships, and if another size suits you better we change it rather than send the wrong one.
Check before you buy
- Find your chest measurement first, then read the size off the chart. Do not start from the size you wear in a different sport.
- Read the cut in the product title. Game, Limited, Elite and Authentic are four different shapes on the same page.
- Decide about layering before you order. Hoodie underneath means never sizing down.
- Check the length, not just the chest, if you are tall or you dislike a long hem.

Common questions
Do NFL jerseys run big?
Yes. The NFL cut is the roomiest and boxiest of the major North American league cuts, with broad shoulders and a hem designed to sit below the hip. Our men's NFL jersey chart runs S 35-37.5in of chest up to 4XL 58-63in, with body length going from 30in to 36in. If you usually take a medium in a t-shirt, a medium NFL jersey will feel noticeably looser than that t-shirt.
Should you size down on an NFL jersey?
Size down one if you want a fitted look and you will wear the jersey on its own or over a t-shirt. Stay at your true size if you want the classic game-day fit the cut was designed for. Do not size down if you plan to wear a hoodie underneath — that is the one case where the room in the jersey is doing useful work.
Can you wear an NFL jersey over a hoodie?
Yes, and the cut is built for it. Order your true size, or one size up if you are broad through the chest and shoulders. A hoodie adds two to three inches of bulk exactly where the jersey is tightest, so sizing down and layering do not go together.
What NFL jersey size should I order if I am between two sizes?
Go up. A roomy jersey reads as intentional and gives you layering room, while a tight one pulls across the back when you reach forward. If you would rather not guess, order either size and email your height, chest and waist measurements to jerseycare@outlook.com — we check the order against the chart before it ships and swap the size if another one fits better.
How long is an NFL jersey?
From 30in at size S to 36in at 4XL, so an inch more per size. It is longer than a t-shirt in the same size and is meant to be worn untucked, with the hem below the hip. Women's jerseys are shorter — 27in to 29in across the range — because they are a contoured cut rather than a scaled-down men's jersey.
Do NFL jerseys shrink in the wash?
The jersey itself is polyester mesh and a cold wash will not shrink it noticeably. Heat is what does the damage: hot water and a tumble dryer can shrink the mesh and lift a heat-pressed name and number. Wash cold, inside out, and dry flat or on a low setting.
